The Urban Homestead is one of our favorite local non-profit organizations. They are all about teaching and preserving traditional home farming techniques blended with modern sustainability solutions. You can learn how to create your own home garden or farm with sustainable resources for you and your family to enjoy for many years to come.

The Urban Homestead offers several great educational programs for both adults and children throughout the community. The events are hosted at their incredible Pasadena urban farm, and are available to individual adults, school classes, scout troops and private groups.

Homestead Learning Tours for Adults

Hosted the second Sunday of each month, The Urban Homestead learning tours will provide a guided tour of the homestead. You will learn how this idealistic family transformed their regular Pasadena home into a wonderful model of urban farming and sustainability. This tour will cover many different homesteading concepts, including food production, growing vegetables, fruits and herbs, soil management, water conservation, raising chickens and energy efficiency. You can learn how to start your own urban homestead that is productive and sustainable.

The monthly Urban Homestead learning tours last approximately two hours (from 3:00pm to 5:00pm) and can host up to 12 people maximum. If you are unable to attend one of the scheduled tours, you can inquire about private group tours for four or more people. Email info@urbanhomestead.org for additional details.

Youth Homestead Tours & Workshops

The Urban Homestead also offers 1-hour hands-on homesteading workshops and farm tours for youth visitors. These are not recurring events, but can be scheduled for student groups or scout troops as an excellent field trip idea. These workshops are geared for children aged 6 to 18. The students will learn sustainable farm-to-table homesteading techniques with educational and fun interactive activities.

Children will have the opportunity to learn the secrets of urban homesteading up close and personal. These hands-on programs are aimed at “teaching valuable knowledge, awareness and life skills” in the words of The Urban Homestead founders. Youth tours and workshops need to be scheduled directly with the organization. Farm tours can handle 5-20 students while learning workshops are available for groups of 6-12, including any teachers and accompanying adults.

Please visit The Urban Homestead’s Events page for more information and scheduling details. You can also donate funds to help support this great organization.
